National Housing Strategy: Cautionary Tales from the U.S.

With the Federal Government's announcement of their National Housing Strategy, including the introduction of the Canada Housing Benefit, low- and moderate-income ACORN members welcome the additional investment in affordable housing. $4 billion has been earmarked for rent subsidies from 2020-2028. However, with little detail about what the housing benefit program will look like, ACORN members are looking to their neighbours across the border, where the U.S. Housing Choice Voucher program (formerly Section 8 Housing) has seen 10 million people on the waiting list for rent subsidies. Our report below highlights some of the key lessons for the Federal Government to ensure that the Canada Housing Benefit has the greatest possible impact for those who need it most.
