Burnaby politics is in for a shakeup. And the one issue that’s driving the change is a rapid loss in older rental buildings to make way for new condo towers in the suburb’s Metrotown area.
Members in the Whalley/Guildford area got together to identify key concerns in the community.
Should the City of New Westminster charge apartment owners for costs it incurs related to renovictions? Could the city slow down the time taken to process building permits for apartments that are evicting tenants so they can do renovations?
Burnaby City Council decided to scrap the proposed demovictions hearing which could have seen another 85 rental units demovicted.

BC ACORN members welcome the introduction of a new task force by the Province, that looks to address issues in rental housing. BC ACORN and other allies have fought for strengthened tenant rights for a number of years. We are hopeful that the task force will hold landlords to account and improve protections for tenants. ACORN calls on the task force to end the renovictions that price low and moderate income tenants out of their homes. Our other demands for Healthy Homes include:
