On Saturday, January 6th, tenants and ACORN Members protested against CAPREIT Property Management over heating issues in their East York apartment building. The tenants of 75 Eastdale have been dealing with these issues for many years. ACORN Member Carol Belenchuk claims that, “CAPREIT is sneaky. They turn the heat up when we are protesting, but turn it back down a few days later. They are just greedy and don’t want to spend the money to keep their tenants warm." Councillor Janet Davis attended the rally in support of tenants.
The following day, a pipe burst in the building leaving tenants without any heat or hot water. Due to media pressure and involvement from ACORN, CAPREIT Management responded immediately to fix the problem. The management company has now committed to keeping the heat on for tenants, and abiding by municipal property standards for apartment building temperatures in Toronto.
